Desalination In Hawaii? Our group looked at the alternative ways in which salt water can be purified and tried to find out about the pros and cons of each method.

Hydrogen Fuel
Our chemistry group did a project discussing the use of Hydrogen as an alternative source of energy in the future. This is a powerpoint roughly outlining different methods of producing and using hydrogen, as well as the pros and cons. The end of our slideshow contains a link to a really interesting youtube newsclip video about how hydrogen technology is being used, if you want to check it out.

Group III

Lauren, Billy, Sherise & Lauren
Our group did a powerpoint project on alternative energy sources we can use in Hawaii, or newly developing types of energy. Such as water, solar, nuclear, fuel cells etc.

Group IV:

iMovie by Kelly S, Toby I, Mark I, Daniel R.
We filmed a project investigating Punahou's water system and what the school is doing in terms of sustainability to conserve/recyle water. First we interviewed students to see how much they knew about the water system, and then we took a water tour with Mr. Piper, physical plant director, to find some real answers.

Group V:

How Batteries Work
By Eddy G. and Scott S.

Our project was basically to research on how batteries work, and to make our own. We made a Daniell Cell, which is a primitive form of a battery, and we did research on a few other types of batteries. We also included some tips on how to extend battery life, which could help us waste less energy.

Sunny Water

By using salt water (ocean-like), a solar powered battery, and a distillation set-up, could the ocean end up being a resource for having fresh water in Hawaii for years to come?

Conclusion: We found that this process of purifying water uses a lot of energy to make only a small amount of water. In other words, this experiment does work, but it probably would not be efficient enough to use as a source for drinking water for the entire population of Honolulu. This WOULD be good if we were on a desert island with no source of fresh water.

I would think it is possible to make a desalinization plant that used solar heat to boil the salt water. Someone should either experiment or research this.
